Suzanne Nees began working with stone in 1989. After spending several years training in granite sculpture at a professional stone carving studio in Japan, she returned to the United States and worked as a resident artist at the Carving Studio in West Rutland, Vermont. In 1996 she established a studio in Blacksburg, Virginia, where she is currently working on a series of illustrations in sumi ink along with her work in stone.
Sue Nees exhibits in Virginia and Japan, and is a member of Fukashi Gallery, a Japanese gallery which specializes in stone sculpture and public art planning. Her work is featured in numerous collections, including the EDA Garden Museum in Yokohama, Japan.
Sue has taught stone sculpture in the New River Valley of Virginia since 2000, with an emphasis on stone carving programs for children. During the summer of 2002 she organized a one-month educational stone sculpture workshop in Blacksburg, Virginia.
In addition to her studio work, Sue organizes a web-based resource for stone sculptors called Traces at www.traces ws. Traces was created to facilitate communication within the international stone sculpture community, and it features news, symposium information, artist portfolios and stone sculpture opportunities.
